prologue to beowulf | henry sweet 1845-1912
watercolour + pigment liner | paper, 110 g/m² | 15 x 19.5 cm

i came across sweet’s anglo-saxon primer a few days ago on my bookshelf and it came to my mind again immediately once i received the IF prompt: it’s an introduction to anglo-saxon or old english. the text used above is the prologue to beowulf, which is one of the most important works of anglo-saxon literature; the original manuscript is kept in the british library. i used the first few lines of the prologue for the illustration.
