bettina eichin’s famous sculpture sits on the kleinbasel side of the “mittlere brücke” in basel. bettina eichin explains on the plate affixed to the left of the allegoric female figure representing switzerland and the swiss people, that helvetia had left her usual abode on the 2 swiss francs coin in order to mingle with ordinary people and to undertake a long journey during which she also visited basel. after a tiring walk through the city, which features quite a number unexpected hilly closes and steep little streets, she put down her suitcase, lance and shield and threw her coat over the bridge’s balustrade: and there she’s still sitting, resting and looking pensively onto the river rhine flowing downstream …
